The Questions We Ask Matter: Why Your Physiotherapy Assessment Starts With Listening

When you come to physiotherapy with pain or an injury, it can be tempting to think the assessment is all about tests, movement assessments and finding the exact structure that is causing the problem.

But at Move With Us Physio & Pilates, we believe one of the most important parts of your assessment happens before we even start testing.

It starts with the questions we ask.

Your story matters

Pain doesn't happen in isolation.

Two people can have very similar symptoms but completely different reasons for why they developed them, what is keeping them going and what they need to do to get better.

That's why your initial physiotherapy assessment isn't simply about asking, "Where does it hurt?"

We want to understand:

  • When did your symptoms start?

  • What were you doing when they began?

  • What makes your symptoms better or worse?

  • How are they affecting your sleep, work, exercise and everyday life?

  • What activities have you stopped doing because of your pain?

  • What are you worried about?

  • What have you already tried?

  • What does getting better actually look like for you?

These questions help us build the bigger picture.

We don't just want to know what hurts, we want to know what you want to get back to

One of the questions we love asking is:

"What do you want to be able to do again?"

For one person, that might be getting back to running.

For another, it might be lifting their toddler without pain, returning to rugby, skiing without worrying about their knee, getting back to the gym, walking the dog, playing golf or simply being able to get through a day at work comfortably.

That goal matters.

At Move With Us, we pride ourselves on helping people get back to what they love doing, not simply reducing a pain score.

Because being told that your pain has improved isn't much use if you're still unable to do the things that are important to you.

The subjective assessment guides everything that comes next

The information you give us helps shape the rest of your physiotherapy assessment.

Your history helps us decide which physical tests are appropriate, what we need to investigate further and which factors may be contributing to your symptoms.

It also helps us identify things that might require further investigation or referral when necessary.

A good assessment isn't about performing every test possible. It's about asking the right questions, listening carefully to the answers and then using that information to guide a focused physical assessment.

Your goals help shape your rehabilitation

Once we understand where you are starting from and where you want to go, we can build a rehabilitation plan around you.

That might include:

Strength training to build capacity and confidence.

Mobility work where appropriate to improve movement.

Pilates to improve control, strength and movement confidence.

Progressive loading to help your body tolerate the demands of your sport, work or everyday life.

Education so you understand what is happening and feel confident managing your symptoms.

And most importantly, progression towards the activities you actually want to return to.

Rehabilitation shouldn't feel like an endless list of exercises with no clear purpose. Each part of your program should have a reason and ultimately help move you closer to your goal.

From pain to performance

We also believe physiotherapy shouldn't stop when you're simply feeling better.

If your goal is to return to running, we want to help you build back to running.

If you're returning to sport, we want to prepare you for the demands of your sport.

If you've had an injury, we want to help you rebuild strength, confidence and capacity so you can get back to doing what you enjoy.

This is where our physiotherapy-led, strength and conditioning approach comes in.

Our goal isn't just to get you out of pain. It's to help you become stronger, more confident and more capable.

So, don't underestimate the questions

The questions we ask at your first appointment aren't just small talk or paperwork.

They are an important part of clinical reasoning.

Your answers help us understand you, not just your injury.

Because ultimately, physiotherapy isn't about treating a knee, a back, a shoulder or an ankle.

It's about helping a person get back to living their life.

What do you want to get back to?

Whether it's running, skiing, sport, the gym, playing with your kids, working without pain or simply moving with confidence again, that's where we want your rehabilitation to take you.

At Move With Us Physio & Pilates in Cromwell, we pride ourselves on getting people back to what they love.

If pain or injury is stopping you from doing the things that matter to you, get in touch and let's work out a plan to get you moving again.
