Postpartum Recovery: Why It’s More Than Just Getting Back to Exercise

As a physiotherapist, I often meet new mums who feel pressure to "get back to exercise" after having a baby — but real postpartum recovery goes much deeper than simply returning to the gym or running again. At Move With Us Physio & Pilates in Cromwell, I help women rebuild from the inside out, so they can feel strong, supported, and confident in their bodies again.

Because here's the truth: your body has been through an incredible transformation, and recovery deserves time, care, and the right kind of movement.

Why Postpartum Rehab Matters

Pregnancy and childbirth place unique demands on the body — including changes in posture, breathing, muscle control, and pelvic floor function. Whether you've had a vaginal birth or C-section, recovery isn’t just about rest, it's about reconnection.

Common postpartum issues I support women with include:

  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)

  • Pelvic floor weakness or dysfunction

  • Low back or pelvic pain

  • Neck and shoulder tension from feeding and lifting

  • Fatigue and deconditioning

  • Uncertainty around safe return to exercise

These are not things you need to “push through” or ignore. With the right guidance, you can move and feel better — safely and effectively.

What Postpartum Recovery Should Look Like

Recovery after birth is not one-size-fits-all. That’s why I created the Move With Us Postpartum Program — a supportive pathway that combines physiotherapy, Pilates, and functional rehab to help women gradually rebuild strength and confidence.

Here’s what we focus on:

  • Breath and core connection

  • Pelvic floor awareness and strengthening

  • Gentle mobility and stability work

  • Gradual return to strength training and cardio

  • Support for lifting, feeding, and day-to-day movement demands

This isn't about bouncing back — it's about building forward, on a strong foundation.

You Don't Have to Do It Alone

There’s so much pressure placed on new mums to “get back to normal” — but the truth is, your body has changed, and that’s not a bad thing. What matters is learning how to support those changes with movement that feels good, functional, and empowering.

At Move With Us, I also offer Mums & Bubs Pilates classes, designed so you can move in a supportive space with your baby close by — because recovery doesn’t always fit into nap times.
