Mat vs. Reformer: Which Pilates Style Fits You Best?

If you’re curious about Pilates and trying to decide between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates, you’re not alone. Both offer incredible benefits for strength, flexibility, posture, and core stability—but they do it in different ways. I love teaching both Mat and Reformer and am passionate about being able to offer both to my lovely patients.

Let’s break down the differences so you can decide which one is right for you.

What Is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is exactly what it sounds like—Pilates exercises performed on a mat, using your bodyweight for resistance. Classes typically focus on controlled movements that strengthen the core, improve alignment, and increase flexibility. As you progress, we can start to add further challenges with resistance bands, ankle weights, and the Pilates ball. You will feel that Pilates burn, but we are all about getting the fundamentals and correct engagement.

Benefits of Mat Pilates:

  • No equipment needed (just a mat!)

  • Great for building foundational strength

  • Easily accessible—can be done at home or in a studio

  • Focuses heavily on technique and form

Mat Pilates is often considered the best starting point for beginners because it teaches the fundamentals of Pilates without relying on any machines.

What Is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates uses a specialized piece of equipment called a Reformer—a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage, springs, and pulleys that create resistance.

Benefits of Reformer Pilates:

  • Adjustable resistance for strength training and support

  • Helps with alignment and control

  • Offers a wide variety of movements and positions

  • Can be gentler on joints thanks to the support of the Reformer

Reformer classes can feel more dynamic and challenging due to the added resistance and range of motion the machine provides.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Try Mat Pilates if you're new to Pilates, prefer minimal equipment, or want a convenient at-home workout.

  • Go for Reformer Pilates if you enjoy using equipment, want more variety and challenge, or need more support for injuries or joint issues.

The truth is—both are effective, and many people find value in doing both! At Move With Us Physio & Pilates we love that we can offer both giving you different options to choose from. Alternating them can give you a well-rounded Pilates experience.

Whether you’re stretching it out on the mat or gliding on the Reformer, Pilates is a fantastic way to build core strength, improve posture, and support overall well-being. Understanding the difference between Mat and Reformer Pilates helps you make the best choice for your goals and lifestyle.
